That's right Tim Bourquin has set up a calendar wiki, just for the parties that are happening at the event. The calendar wiki is located at http://newmediaexpo.pbwiki.com/ . At the moment there are not any events posted, but give it time. I am sure there will plenty to choose from in the very near future.

Mr Highfield was giving a keynote entitled “Distribute or Die” to the MipTV conference in Cannes. The iPlayer is expected to be released at the end of the year. The BBC said plans to roll it out first for Windows machine then expand it for cable TV and other platforms such as Apple Macs, media centre PCs and smart handheld devices, such as mobiles or PDAs. A new trial, involving on-demand delivery of the BBC’s archive has also been announced. The trial will involve 20,000 viewers and start next month.

A deal has been struck between record companies and UK's commercial radio allowing music clips to be played in podcasts. The Times reports, "Now stations such as Capital 95.8, Heart and Magic FM can include up to 30 seconds of music tracks from leading recording artists in podcasts, in a move that the industry hopes will create a new trend of music podcast downloads among listeners." Nick Piggott, digital content manager for GCap Media, which owns Capital 95.8, said: “Radio stations have, until now, been fairly limited. Virtually all podcasting in the UK has been speech-based, which obviously does not suit music-based stations. This agreement will help podcasts to become more mainstream by increasing their appeal to music listeners.”

The NPD group released numbers for January's MP3 (hard drive based) player sales.  Microsoft's Zune player was at #2 with a 9.9% market share.  Although NPD's scope doesn't include sales in arenas such as Apple Stores and Costcos, the impact on the marketplace of the Zune player can't be denied. Zune marketing recomends "Passing On" Podcast content, but to this point offers no Podcatching element in the Zune hardware or Windows (only) syncing software.  Microsoft recently announced a Zune firmware upgrade for later this month but notes that the upgrade includes no Podcast features.

When Ask a Ninja reported a deal with Federated Media to sell advertising in the video podcast, it was quickly reported by NewTeeVee that the deal was worth "$300,000 upfront along with 60 percent of ad revenue". NewTeeVee reports in an update to its original post that John Battelle, chairman of Federated Media, has emailed them denying that payments have been made. Nonetheless, NewTeeVee claims a source who maintains that money has been advanced to the Ninja crew to allow them to "focus on creating new episodes" and that the deal is worth "at least $300,000 a year". There is no comment on the Federated Media blog.

Mass(achusetts) Media January 28th, 2007 by Laurence Simon

The new Governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick, is podcasting. According to WHDH, Governor Patrick stated that the campaign showed how important it was to have direct communications with the people. Unlike other so-called "podcasts" by celebrities or politicians, where a sound file is posted for click-to-download, this appears to be a true podcast with an RSS feed.

Rocketboom, a popular "quirky" video podcast about technology, reported earnings last year of USD247,412. Andrew Baron, owner of Rocketboom, says in his blog, "$210k of that was in advertising and licensing and the rest was mostly from consulting and merchandising." He goes on to say, "I realize its unusual to report this kind of information and I may not have the luxury of doing so in the future (and may not even want to myself) but I'm hoping to emphasize the point while I can - a point that I have often tried to make - which is that you can do this." Thanks to Paul Colligan for the pointer
