Podcasting and on-demand delivery could "transform" the BBC April 18th, 2007 by Steven Lewis
There have been nearly 4m downloads of BBC video podcasts since the corporation began a trial in August. Separately, the BBC’s has finished a trial of its iPlayer. The player allows UK-based viewers to catch up for free on TV programs aired in the previous seven days. The BBC has offered a similar service to radio listeners for years.The iPlayer could eventually be the platform for over 10% of BBC television viewing, according to Ashley Highfield, the BBC’s director of new media & technology. Mr Highfield was giving a keynote entitled “Distribute or Die” to the MipTV conference in Cannes.
The iPlayer is expected to be released at the end of the year. The BBC said plans to roll it out first for Windows machine then expand it for cable TV and other platforms such as Apple Macs, media centre PCs and smart handheld devices, such as mobiles or PDAs.
A new trial, involving on-demand delivery of the BBC’s archive has also been announced. The trial will involve 20,000 viewers and start next month.
