John McJunkin
Hi Everybody!

I'd like to formally invite you to listen to my new podcast, The Podcast Pro Tech & Tips Podcast. Every other Wednesday, I publish a new episode, each with "tech" - a product review of podcasting technology, and "tips" - how-to information on podcasting. I have a podcast production firm and I spoke at last year's New Media Expo and I'll be speaking again at this year's expo as well. I am happy to answer questions, and I'll entertain your suggestions for show topics. Please come listen!

This turkey has no shame! He spams PCA, he spams the Pickle! What other unfortunate place will be next?

He's like the Cloverfield monster dropping all his spam parasites on hapless forum netizens!

Enough already!

I'm curious, Eric. If 98 percent of all e-mail is spam, how are you supposed to get noticed if you don't spam as well? Sending a deluge unsolicited e-mail newsletters obvious doesn't work anymore. Forums are spammed as well, and Twitter and Facebook are only for webaholics. Furthermore, podcasts have become so professional (read: inflexible), that exchanging promos kills the format and annoys the listeners/viewers.

So, how does one advertise oneself among podcasters? What kind of stunt do you have to perform to get the attention of very busy people?

What's annoying is that he posted the identical message three times on the Pickle in three different categories (here, in Podcast Promos, and in Product Reviews & User Recommendations), but he didn't even bother to post to the correct category -- Show Off Your Show. I'm not a full-fledged moderator, so I don't feel comfortable handling this. I would suggest that the other two instances of the message be deleted, and this thread remain.

Rasheed, there are lots of ways. Not all podcasts are above promos, especially if they're tailored to the podcast they're being promoted on.

And while it's true that forums get a lot of spam, a majority of the people (something like 99%) that receive spam perceive it unfavorably. That means only 1% of the population is interested in what you're selling. That 1% "sale" rate may be considered a good number for Nigerian bankers and penis pills, but not for promoting your podcast.

I also don't think you need a stunt, per se, like this. He should try involving himself in a community with his cast info in his sig line. A supposed expert on podcasting must surely have something to contribute to a podcasting forum, after all. Otherwise, he's just annoying people and blowing hot air!

There is no way of knowing for sure that the poster is who he says he is. He just as well could be impostor, who is out to harm the reputation of the real person, by spamming the forums that represent his area of expertise. But if he is the real John McJunkin, he has serious problems with his online social skills.

There are forums where such behavior gets your subscription canceled, because it is considered rude and very inappropriate, similar to posting in ALL CAPS all the time, or messing up each post with dozens of smilies, hoping to be funny. Teenagers do it all the time, but that's why they still need the guidance of adults, to tell them what is appropriate and what's not. I don't expect this kind of childish behavior (cross posting) from a so-called experienced adult.

BTW I had a lovely story about people having lofty thoughts in high places, and other people, more down to earth, standing in the mud of real life, having to endure the downpour of crappy thoughts from above, falling onto them like lead balloons, and I standing among them in the same stinky mud, but I decided not to post it.

Muddied but still here,

True, thought the best way to generate more spam is to respond to it, and the best way to get more people to read a spam post is to... respond to it. So right now we're actually promoting it!

Bump!
