Full Version: Is Podcasting Making You Money?

I was wondering about this and was discussing this at the Seattle podcast meetup last week and it amazed me how people are making money on podcasting and enjoying what they do.

What interest me the most about our conversations was that most of us were not making our money on our own podcasts, but because of jobs we received by doing the podcast. I have a friend who is a podcast specialist now for companies, a friend who does podcasts for a company, and even I have received a job doing work for a website because I approached them on doing a podcast.

I think that this is interesting as we go into the next generation of podcasting that people who talked about monetization are now making their money by networking and prior podcasting work that may not be all about podcasting. Though some have been able to make money off their own podcasting, (Distorted View as a great example) I wondered about you in the podcasting world who have found work or now in a job because of your podcasting that you never thought you ever do and it's something you love.

I'm a public relations professional, and one of the podcasts I produce is actually for a client. So, I'm paid my hourly rate to put that one together.

The other podcast was produced with two goals in mind. One goal is to help draw clients into my PR business. The other goal is to sell sponsorships and make a little money doing something I really enjoy. It's early in the life of the podcast (about to publish episode #4) so we'll see how that works out. It's sucking up a lot of time that should go to clients and I'm a little concerned about that.

If you think Distorted View is a "great" example of anything, you have your head in the wrong place. I thought you were a good Mormon boy, Luke. tongue.gif

Naw, podcasting is just costing us money really. But we love it so it's all good. Maybe one day though we'll make some money off it.
