When I started Planet Retcon way back in January, my main goal was to not be on the show. I like writing the stories, and knew I could handle all the technical stuff, but I really didn't want to do ANY reading.

Of course, I had far more characters than actors, so I took a couple of the smaller parts myself. Then I did the intro and outro. Then I did a solo show. After a while, I became numb to my horrible voice and just allowed it to not bother me.

Then, just now, listening to my latest Good Music Show, I suddenly *liked* the way I sounded. What's up with that? Has this happened to anybody else?

I had always thought my voice sucked. When I started podcasting my mom said "I always thought you should be in radio". I figure, that's just mom. But I subscribe and listen to each show and I actually enjoy my voice now. Kinda like comfy pajamas. smile.gif

I definitely think I've gotten used to how my voice sounds and I don't hate it anymore. But having to listen to 80+ episodes across two podcasts will have that effect, I suppose. If you really hate your voice after doing a few shows, you're not going to podcast for long...

The sound you think of as "your voice" is not what others hear when you speak.

You are the only person who hears that particular sound that you think of as your voice. It originates from inside your head, and creates sounds that vibrate through your skull. The sound leaves your mouth in front of your ears, so you hear only reflected or indirect sound waves. Nobody else can hear your voice the way you do.

When you hear your voice played from a recording, you are actually hearing what everybody else hears all the time.

I hate my voice... Okay, hate is strong but I think I sound all funny. I guess I will get use to it, it has only been three shows.

I hear you Mr. Bob. But it gets better. I still hate my voice but at least I can listen to my own show now.

This subject reminds me of Rob's latest show...that are podcasters are, at least, a little narcissistic. wink.gif

At the risk of bucking the trend(and sounding a bit stuck on myself) I do like the sound of my voive. But I think a lot of that has to do with my interests. I've been singing since several years of age, acting in high school and college and I did radio for nearly a decade.

Again, maybe its just that I got used to the whole comfort level of public performance early on. Embrace it, folks. Makes the podcasting thang that much more fun.

I like the sound of my voice a lot when I'm reading other people's material, or even a semi-prepared script of my own. When I hear my own extemporized shows, I hear not the voice, but the vocal and vocabulary tics I have. I think I use too many words and I feel I could say things more simply. So I end up thinking I sound strange and stilted. Then I'll hear some bit I did for aother podcaster and I'll think, "Hey, not bad!"

On of the major issues I have wiht my voice isn't even my voice. I use um and uh ALOT and cruch words like So and And Now... I am working to correct all of these little vocal tics but it could take some time. For now, to the editing... smile.gif

I tried using Castblaster (like a real time DJ) and I still had way too many verbal ticks. I ended up editing them out anyway.

I am getting used to my voice. It is more nasal than I hear in my head.. blink.gif

I always wanted to be the DJ but my voice would't let me. biggrin.gif. I wonder how much real DJ's voices are manipulated electronically to get the DJ sound.

A lot.

First, they do get training in how to breathe. And a lot of DJs adopt that Bill Murray lounge singer style.

There's frequently a thumping rhythmic bed under their voice, almost subliminal. The folk wisdom is that it creates energy, but all it does for me is give me a headache.

Some of them use a hint of reverb and EQ to bring out the best of their voice.

But mostly, they are compressing the hell out of the sound, to increase the "punch"

AJay, I use Audition (free from a friend of mine who was crazy enough to buy it and never use it...) and was curious if you had any tutorials on how to do what you are explaining. I would love to add "punch" to my voice smile.gif

Well, I don't like listening to my voice....maybe I'm a terrible podcaster because of this but I don't usually listen to my own shows. When I am recording and editing I listen in order to cut out mistakes, etc. And I always check the beginning and end of segments so they flow together. I download all my shows (to make sure they are working) but I don't listen at that point.

I don't really like the sound of my voice in my podcasts, but I *do* like how it sounds after I speed it up for the midget voice or slow it down and lower it with an echo for Planet Z's stories.

If I had known then what I know now, I'd have done the podcast all-midget or all-Z.

There's a lot of good voices in the Weekly Challenge regulars... Rahel, Elisson, and Caroline come to mind.

This was something I was conerned about when I started my Pod cast. I've never liked my voice on Tape. I was actually surprised that I didn't mind my voice when I did my first show and then I had a couple people rely on how they liked my voice and I haven't really thought about it since.

But I agree if you really don't like your voice your podcast isn't likely to last, as you will likely have a hard time doing a good edit of your show.

When I started my show, I couldn't stand hearing my own voice, and then episode #3 hit where I took out too much noise and didn't realize it. Made it unlistenable. Since then I listen to each show to make sure it doesn't happen, and have gotten used to my voice, and at times even enjoy hearing it.

NOOOOOO! There's no magic left in the world. I really didn't know - and I wish that was still the case. I'll do my best to forget not to remember that.

I enjoy the voices of my characters but generally not my real voice. I'm getting more used to it though now I've done a bit of stuff as myself.
