I saw this on digg, and thought it might be of some interest to those just starting out with blogging/podcasting.

I personally didn't sign up, but from what the commenters on digg said, it's all pretty much as advertised.

The only thing is that they give you a subdomain, but if you own your own domain, you could always choose to have it redirected to your "webstoop" page.

Just thought I'd share it with ya'll

Josh

I don't understand their business model, but maybe I'll give 'em a try.

I've been using LibSyn and love it. Not only do you get the same unmetered bandwidth but because they archive your old files after you reach your monthly allotment of space, you never have to lose the old shows either -- and you don't get penalized for having them. Is this other site doing the same or does your archive count toward your gig of space?

The gig is the only thing you get, but for that price ($0), you could just probably get another account for Season 2.

I just fell victim to the Siteground "your podcast is misbehaving so we are limiting access to it" behavior. What's the misbehavior? Someone was downloading a bunch of my podcasts all at once -- something I have no control over. Sweet, huh?

Having said that, 1 gig of disk space won't cut it for me (hey, daily podcast, you know, and so far I've never removed any mp3 from the site, although that may change) so I'll probably wind up moving on to another pay host, maybe dreamhost.

Yeah they must have new management because that's happened to me twice. They put a sql script on my site to specifically monitor my site in real time.

I've been tempted to delete it, but they'd probably close out my account and lock me out for good.

Their service has gotten really bad lately. If I ever get a 503 error, they tell me that they're forwarding my ticket to customer service and it will take up to a day to get a response (usually 12 hours). They then tell me that something happend but because the logs rolled over, they can no longer see the resolved problem, so they THEN unlimit my account.

They wanted to charge me some exorbanent fee ($75) to clean up my wordpress sql database. They said it was essential, and that my wordpress database was too big and clogging up their shared server that i was on.

Thanks to Steve from Wicked Good Podcast, I optimized my wordpress in no more than 3 minutes, and they were happy.

This is definitely NOT the siteground that i originally signed up for. hell, my stats have considerably dropped off my peak, and it's now when i start to get hassles from them.

I'm not saying anything bad about your show, mind. I'm just poiting out that, some times, you get far more than you pay for.

Actually I was (with bad timing) reffering to the original service Josh posted about. Without an obvious business model I wouldn't suspect any great stability.

And I was replying to seuss's reply that I thought (correctly, for once) was to the original post.

But I was talking in general. I can't understand a podcaster using that term.

With the talk of hosting, I thought I would throw out my hosting service switchpod.com . We provide free and paid hosting. Our free hosting is ad supported, the ads are inserted into your feed as a seperate file so your listeners have the option to download them. The ads are mostly show promos. Our paid version ranges from 100mb of space to 2gb of space. Prices ranging from $3-$30 per month.

I just thought I would explain our service.

Also, we are looking to get a bunch of bigger name podcasters to move to service so we can really stress test our system. If anyone with 500+ subscibers would like to move to switchpod we would provide them with hosting free of charge. Email Jake@switchpod.com if interested.

Like I told you at the time, though, all these hosting companies have terrible customer service, and it definitely seems like they don't give a crap about you unless you're on a dedicated server and you're actually paying their bills. With a free host, there's even less incentive for them to not suddenly pull the plug and leave you in the lurch; at least with someone you're paying, even if it's only $5 or $10 a month, there's some incentive for them not to pack up and leave town in the middle of the night.

Speaking of which, I just went to the link in the original post and it looks like the cupboard is bare...

For those still shopping around, siteground appears to have done it to me again; none of my mp3s are accessible via the web. (Well, better yet, what you get is a 0 length file.)

I'll be changing hosts, oh, today, I expect. This is ridiculous.

I can't say enough good things about dreamhost. $7.95 a month and quite feature rich.

If you find they fit your needs please use this link or enter my gmail address as a refferer.
