+ ![]() I now use an ifp 899 and never use that little headphone volume adjustmet (noise creating p.o.s.) and ccasionaly a 25 dollar omni mono lapel mic from radio shack ![]() sometimes I record directly into my PC, using SF8. For skype shows, I record my guest/cohost onto my ifp899 and record myself through my cpu via SF8. Works pretty well. Always Directly encode at the IFPs best level can range from 44/160 to 44/320. Fun with pitchers! ![]() Jack This post has been edited by jack: Jan 30 2006, 01:18 AM -------------------- |

A Dell notebook I purchased four years ago, Audacity and a microphone made from a company I can't pronounce nor read because it is in Chinese.

I think our setup takes the cake...After trying out many of the different lapel mics, etc...that we had laying around, we found our Playstation Singstar microphones did the best job. Not only can we both be talking at the same time, but it gives this cool effect where each of us comes into a separate headphone. Everyone who has listened so far says it is a really interesting effect - - you always know where to expect to hear each person (i.e Ghada in the left ear, Chris in the right ear). It was also the easiest setup as the playstation mics have a USB converter for easy plug into the the ole G4 Powerbook.
We use garageband to record and for minimal post-production and to create our intros and outros with the Apple Loops Recently got an iRiver T30 - amazing is all I can say! This little thing is inexpensive and has amazing sound quality even w/o a line in attachment (but you could add a mic if you wanted). Check out our podcast - to hear our "out and about segments" Cheers ![]() ghada@iheartnz.com -------------------- |

coupla questions: spartacus - how do you like acid. thinking of buying it as a upgrade from audacity I use ACID, SF and Audacity. Soundforge has a lot of little bells and whistles and an interface with a loooong evolution, so I find it easier to use than Audacity. ACID can feel somewhat limiting as a compositional tool when compared to the higher end product, though some people swear by it. It feels like a step up from fruity loops to me. But as a piece of software to drag and drop sound clips and order them up with all sorts of fades, it is great. -------------------- The Spartacus Roosevelt Podcast, a weekly hour of obscure noise, glitchy electropop, fake nostalgia, bastardized exotica, tweaky lounge, creepy ambient and musical non sequitors.

Well we have 2 setups... so I'll give them both as 'kits'.
Current Primary: Shure SM58 Mic (Jerry) Audio Technica Model not available at the time of typing w/ actual popstopper (Rob) Audio Technica Pro 60 w/ actual popstopper (Bryan) Audio Technica Pro 40 (Guest) This dumps into an Alesis Multimix 8 FireWire Firewire audio is routed to my Apple 1.25 GHz G4 iBook Peak 4 is used for Capturing audio, recording through VST plugins VST plugins running in real-time: Compressor and Limiter Skype Audio and other live audio from Apple 1.67 GHz G4 PowerBook (Rob) Additional Apple 1.25GHz G4 iBook used for audio playback, backup and audio capture Sound Byte OSX on that machine to trigger audio Live Music done primarily on the Roland XP-60 (Jerry) Monitoring is done via Headphone/Control Room jack on Alesis to Rolls 4-way Headphone splitter amplifier Both Jerry and Rob are monitoring on Sony Studio Monitor Headphones I am monitoring on Memorex $30 Noise Cancelling headphones, but am on my way to getting the same as them. Encoding is currently done in iTunes, though it sucks. Album art and ID3 tags are also being done in iTunes. RSS feed being done with Dreamweaver 8. Second setup (and previous primary) Same Mics Audio put into Behringer MX64A mixer Then 2 stereo channels routed to M-Audio 410 FireWire interface Firewire audio is routed to my Apple 1.25 GHz G4 iBook Recording done via Peak 4 (previously into Logic Express) VST plugins running in real-time: Compressor and Limiter Same Monitoring setup, attached to Behringer mixer Same Encoding, ID3 tag, and RSS feed input. Mobile Setup: Sony MiniDisc MZ-NF810 Sony One Point Stereo Microphone Cleanup and Edit done in Peak4 on the iBook imac g5 Does yours have that high-pitch fan whine? I really liked my iMac other than that problem, and it was totally audible on our recordings. I sold it just because of that problem, and found that up to 1/3 of iMac owners could be reporting this problem. I wonder if the Intel Macs do it. -------------------- Bryan

Same gear as every time this topic comes up.
iRiver 790, Plantronics AUDIO .70 headset (just bought a second one, should be at the mailbox today, woot, going to carry it in my backpack so I can record podcasts AT ANY MOMENT), then to edit and mix I use Audacity under XP. That's it. I own a Giant Squid lapel mic but haven't used it for podcasting. Oh, yeah, I use Gizmo Project for the interviews. El Nacho and others tell me it sucks, as if I'd started caring what other people think at some point. -R -------------------- |

Toshiba Laptop for recording.
Software: Audacity for recording (free) Post production software: Pod Producer (free) Mic: Shure PM 58 ($58.00) Mixer: Kustom 4 channel with amp and speakers (I use this for my speaking engagements) $150.00 Mic: Technics Lapel mic (also used for my speaking engagements) $100.00 Graphic Equalizer: Realistic model that I received as a gift back in 1983, value approx. $100.00 Speaker Phone: Panasonic with answering machine. Also received this as a gift back in 1990. It's an old tape style answering machine that I replaced with a digital style a couple of years ago, but kept in around because the phone still worked. I'm glad I kept it around. Headphones: Koss Porta-Pro. Record the interviews on Audacity. Mix all the interviews, live liners, and music in real time using Pod Producer. -------------------- |

Well, if you need the 3rd mic, its kinda of a pain, but we've only used that while standing and one of us would hold that crappy logitech mic and point it in the direction of the interviewee.
It looks worse than it is, fortunately its really free of noise and when you just sit down on a couple couches in the living room or something, theres about 5-6 feet of slack per component, I just bundled the cords for that picture. Basically you put on the headset and the other guy puts on the lapel mic and phones or another headset of preferred, and then you plug in, you don't, make no mistakes, EVER, under any circumstances, do you try to start with everything plugged in and then attempt to "mount" the setup, that just doesn't work and tends to be messiers than coathangers on monday. but its a good question. If I do a show by myself, all I really need is 1 headset or the lapel mic and i'm good, but, its customizable and I wanted to display in the most pimp-my-cheap-iriver style I could for the photo. When walking or whatever, one guy can easily wear the iriver around the neck , use the lapel mic and phones, there is 6 feet of slack for the other guy with whatever headset/mic combo he wishes to use. God how I wish my iriver had a line in AND seperate external mic input. I could then patch in all songs while recording, think of the components and wires I could get into trouble with then! Peaceout- Jack This post has been edited by jack: Jan 30 2006, 05:35 PM -------------------- |
