It’s been one of those week. This is going to be a somewhat short episode. I have a unique reason, my cloud went away at the most in opportune time. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about. The cloud it the term used for using Internet (or online) services. Like Google Doc, Spotify, Dropbox and countless other services. When you do quite a bit of work in the cloud. Well, when its not there, you get nothing done. So I encourage everyone who works in the cloud. Always have a local backup.
In this week’s episode, "In The News", I take a look at the Kindle, and there’s a Blog Oklahoma update.

Hey everyone. Sorry I couldn’t get a podcast out last week. I just got tangled up in other projects to properly work on one. To make up for it, I’m starting to roll out few new segments to the podcast that I hope you’ll enjoy. But before we begin I’d like to congratulate Jari Askins and Mary Fallin on winning their respective primaries. I’m really looking forward to this year’s governors race. I’d also like to remind everyone the run off election is coming up in a few short weeks on August 24th. Check with your local county elections board for details. To all the other politicians, parties, and pundits: you can stop calling my house now. Stupid robocalls.

Blog Oklahoma Podcast 69: a small cold dark north facing windowless office

http://traffic.libsyn.com/blogoklahoma/bok-100721-69.mp3

It’s just too hot, too dusty, and too cat infested at the home office right now to do a podcast. So I brought my podcasting equipment down to the small cold dark north facing windowless office, all in the hopes I can do at least an adequate job in a cool cat free environment.
For those of you unfamiliar with the small cold dark north facing windowless office, it’s my day job office. It’s a small office located on the north side of the building and I have no windows. In the winter time the Oklahoma wind howls, and it makes this office ever so cold. Plus I have a light that’s going out, so it’s dark. Thus it’s a small cold dark north facing windowless office.
I don’t think I’ll make it a habit to record here, but at least for the time being it will have to do.
I would like to remind everyone to go vote on Tuesday July 27th for the Oklahoma Primary Election. Polls are open from 7 AM to 7 PM. Even if you are not registered Republican or Democrat, I would encourage you to stop by your polling place, you may have a local election you can participate in. If you are unsure where your polling place is, contact your local county elections board. You can find its number in the phone book or by visiting OK.gov/elections.

Podcast Moving From Sunday to Wednesday

http://blogoklahoma.libsyn.com/podcast_moving_from_sunday_to_wednesday

So I was reviewing my family’s schedule for the rest of the summer and discovered my weekends are just full. If it’s not family trips, its time needed to work on the house and yard. I also found over my vacation last week that it was nice to be away from the keyboard, even for just a couple of days. So I’ve made the decision to reschedule when I record the Blog Oklahoma Podcast. Upon review, the best time to record is Wednesday night.
There are several benefits to this time shift for me, and I don’t believe this move will interfere with anyone’s listening habits. I looked over the stats the other day, and most of the listens happen much later in the week.
If you have any thoughts on my schedule change, please feel free to contact me. Your feedback is always welcome.

I’ve been watch several World Cup matches over the last week or so and I’ve discovered something. They’re 90 minutes long. So I’ve had to do something to keep my American short attention span in check. I’ve found on a few broadcasts I can switch language feeds. The other day I watched an entire match in German. Very entertaining. Oh wait a moment, something missing. I’m talking about World Cup and it’s not sounding right. Luckily there is an app for that. I don’t know how I’ve ever enjoyed listening to sports with out the constant drone of angry bees. Now with this handy iPhone app I can enjoy the vuvuzela anytime I want to liven up a sporting event like oh say the U.S. Open.

It’s probably because I’ve only had a grilled cheese sandwich today and I guess I’m hungry. It’s amazing though in roughly 2 minutes I can enjoy some hot buttery popcorn. I’m just old enough to remember it use to take 3 1/2 minutes, and you use to have to stand by the microwave and listen for it to stop popping or it would burn. I can remember many a day at the office when the smell of burnt popcorn wafted down the hallways. Luckily those days are gone now that popcorn technology gotten us to 2 minutes. I’m gonna go get some popcorn.

As many of you already know its storm season here in Oklahoma. I hope everyone is safe and sound, and my prayers go to all to stay safe, and to everyone already effected by the recent storms. If you haven’t yet, I’d advise you get a storm kit together. A storm kit consists basic first aid supplies among other important items you’ll need just in case the worse happens. Now we keep a bag near the door so we can quickly grab it if we have to leave for the shelter. In it well keep a flashlight, a small first aid kit, our checkbooks, a weeks worth of medication, a phone charger, a weather radio, and a change of socks. That’s just little an example. I suggest you visit ready.gov and read up on what you should have in a storm kit. I’ll have a link in the show notes.

It’s been one of those weeks. I am mentally tired right now. Besides working on the Blog Oklahoma clean up, it’s been ’Get It Done’ time at the day job, not to mention all the household chores, dealing with life in general, and hey getting a podcast out this week. The only moment of peace I’ve had all week were the few hours it took to mow the lawn. The first mow of the season. It’s just me, the lawn, the mower, and what ever playing on my iPod at that time. It was bliss. Even though I was physically exhausted when I got done; mentally I was relaxed. Well, up until the time my son lost his key that he in his possession just mere moments before. Sigh. Hurry up lawn and grow. I need to mow.

You would think that getting a new house would be a fairly straight forward process; you determine what you want, get a list of homes that fit that criteria and then you select one. In practice, it is a chaotic and confusing fall down a rabbit hole of increasingly complex legal and financial requirements spinning around your head like angry bees, waiting to swoop in and sting you if you make a single mistake; while at the same time trying to arrange to visit with increasingly annoyed sellers who don’t want to have to stop watching jeopardy so you can see the home that they claim they want to sell. Hello this is your guest host Chad Henderson, and as you can tell, I am trying to find a home.
A very big thank you to Chad for filling in for me this week. Please feel free to check out his podcast, ElmoCast. I’ll be back next week with an all new episode. - Kevin

When I started doing some preliminary work last night for this week’s podcast there was a few inches of snow on the ground. Now as I’m recording this, I look out the home office window, and I hardly see any snow except for a few shady spots. It’s amazing how Oklahoma’s weather works. Really nice day Friday, blizzard Saturday, nice day Sunday. But that is the old running gag here in the state, isn’t it. If you don’t like the weather wait a minute. That was very much true this weekend wasn’t it.

At least my sense of the seasons is still working. The weather is getting warm, the birds are singing, the weeds in my lawn are starting to turn green, oh yes I know exactly what this means. It means Baseball season is just around the corner. The Grapefruit and Cactus leagues are training right now, getting ready for that all important opening day that’s less than a month away. I’ve already installed the new MLB AtBat iPhone app, I have my new Cubs baseball cap on order and it should arrive soon, and I’ve double check that I’m signed up for DirecTV’s MLB Extra Innings.
I’m happy to announce the Blog Oklahoma Podcast has won for best podcast in the 2009 Okie Blog Awards. Thank you very much for this honor. The podcast was up against some stiff competition, but in the end I’m guessing my forty listeners rallied to put the podcast over the top. Now this has gotten me thinking, there has to be more than 10 active podcasts here in the state. So over the next few weeks I’m going to explore the Oklahoma pod-o-sphere, and whatever I find I’ll let you know know about it. Again thank you to everyone for voting for the Blog Oklahoma Podcast.

http://traffic.libsyn.com/blogoklahoma/BOK-100221-54.mp3

As I record this podcast it’s 32 degrees outside. How many of you are so ready for spring? There are many things you can do to get ready for spring, one of which is to start planning your garden. Here at the home office we’ve gotten a start our vegetable garden by planting some seeds in a starter tray. In fact that tray is about six feet away from me right now. We put it here in the office so we can keep an eye on it better, to make sure it gets plenty of water, and to make sure the cat stays out of it. In a few short weeks we’ll see them sprout, and in a few weeks more after that we will be able to transfer them outside. Growing your own vegetables is a very worthwhile thing to do. And not to mention home grown tomatoes are the absolute best. Not only will it save you a little grocery money around harvest time; you’ll get plenty of exercise working in your garden. I was hoping to get an early start with the podcast today, but that just didn’t work out. My home router has started to act up, and I’ve spent most the day trying to get it reconfigured so I can be online. It’s Super Bowl Sunday, and I’m planning to spend the evening eating hot wings and watching some football. So what to do? I think it’s about time for another Music Spectacular. Where we look back to some of the best music played here on the Blog Oklahoma Podcast over the last few episodes. So sit back and enjoy. And I’ll be back next time with an all new episode, as soon as I get this stupid router fixed. Links mentioned in this episode:

I hope everyone is safe and warm on this most monochromatic of weekends. I’m sure most of you have looked out a window this morning and saw nothing but white. Here in the west OK we had some defrosting on Saturday, but that’s been stopped dead in its tracks. Now everything is frozen again. Hard. I know this for certain because when I took our dog Widget out for a walk this morning, and I promptly slipped on the curb and fell on my ass. Now pride aside I’m fine, but at least I gave Widget a good laugh. In The News: Some of the latest headlines from the Oklahoma blog-o-sphere and the main street media.

Just get back into the swing of things and what happens? Tax season. The entire family is impatiently waiting for all our W-forms and other tax information to come in so we can file our taxes. This year it’s doubly important we get ahead of things, because we get to fill out, for the first time, financial aid forms necessary for our son’s high educational needs coming this fall. And I have come to the conclusion that former military bureaucrats are running financial aid offices. It’s all hurry up and wait. They all want you to file early, but you can’t file early until you get all your tax information in. And many organizations are in no hurry to send it to you. It’s enough to make you pull your hair out. Luckily I’ve taken the philosophy of it’ll get done when it’s done. You can’t do anything about it until you get everything in. So there’s no point worrying about it. Now if I could just convince my wife and son of this, I think we’ll have a more relaxed household. So how’s your week been?

Had a slight rendering issue with Windows Movie Maker so the slide show wasn’t smooth in some places.
What did I learn from this year’s project? The iPhone camera shouldn’t be used for a project like this. The iPhone is good for quick candid pictures, but for quality photography not so much. Even though my Kodak digital camera is now a few generations old, it took way better pictures.

They don’t realize you’ve changed the schedule. So this morning and every morning since November 1st around 5 AM Widget has to go outside, now! So it’s either wake up, drag myself out of bed, and let the dog out, and attempt to start the day; or let Widget throw a fit for just one more hour. It’s a no win situation either way. Yawn!

Did you know your fifth wedding anniversary is the wood anniversary?. I’m not sure what I’m suppose to get Donna. Considering the season, I’m thinking of a wooden stake. So she’ll have something to protect her from all those Twilight fans. Ooo Creepy!

It’s been cold and dreary out there this week. Autumn has definitely fallen on us. Hopefully everyone got there container plants inside or at least in a protected area. I know we did. I was hoping to get in one last lawn mowing for the season, but that’s looking like it’s going to have to wait, if it happens at all. I guess I’ll just have to suffer a winter with a shaggy brown lawn. Welcome to Autumn.

Blog Oklahoma Podcast 38: Oklahoma, Go Blog Something

http://traffic.libsyn.com/blogoklahoma/BOK-090830-38.mp3

Every week when I visit many of the member blogs for the podcast I notice some people posted daily, some weekly, some monthly, and others well I think they might have forgotten they have a blog. In this era of Twitter, Facebook, and other like services, many of us forget to post in the long form.

So this got me asking myself if I can do something to get you to blog. The answer I got back was probably not, but I’m going to try anyway. So I’m suggesting to the Oklahoma blogging community to declare Wednesday, September 9, 2009 as "Oklahoma, Go Blog Something Day!”

There are no suggested topics. No events to promote. No propaganda to spread. In fact there is no reason what so ever for this day other than the fact to get you to post something to your blog.

Okay I will suggest one thing, post something longer than 140 characters. This is your opportunity to reestablish yourself in paragraph form.

Tell your friends, post to Twitter, Facebook, or where ever you’ve been hanging out. Encourage your fellow Oklahomans to go blog something on Wednesday, September 9, 2009.

It’s that time of year once again that is both joyous and frustrating for young and old alike. It’s back to school time for Oklahoma. It’s joyous to see all your school friends again, and frustrating to have to get up before noon now. It’s joyous to see your children off to school for another year of education and growth. It’s frustrating because one you’ll miss them, and two its so damn hard to get them out of bed, dressed, and out to meet the bus some mornings.

Please keep in mind on your daily commute to work that all the school zones are now active once again. So please keep an eye out for those kids walking to school or getting on or off the school bus. Let’s had a safe and wonderful school year.

I hope to be up and running again soon, but I can’t give a time frame. Please keep your fingers crossed this remodeling project doesn’t end up like a Tom Hanks movie. Thanks for your understanding, and I hope to have a podcast again soon.

http://traffic.libsyn.com/blogoklahoma/BOK-090705-32.mp3

Greetings Everyone. I hope all of you had an wonderful and safe independence day holiday weekend.

I originally intended to start off this podcast by read to you the Star Spangled Banner, the poem written by Francis Scott Key on September 3, 1814. Many of you will find it familiar as our national anthem, but remember before it was a song it was a poem. I thought it would make a good patriotic way to end the Independence Day weekend. But I just couldn’t do it. It became very challenging to read out loud. I just couldn’t do the poem justice. Every time I would start off, I would hear in the back of my head, (tune), the song and you want to sing. And you just can’t read it that way. ...

Oh! say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming;
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze o’er the towering steep
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam;
Its full glory reflected now shines on the stream;
’Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh! long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is the band who so vauntingly swore,
’Mid the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country they’d leave us no more?
Their blood hath washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution;
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation;
Blessed with victory and peace, may the Heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just,
And this be our motto, "In God is our trust":
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Blog Oklahoma Podcast 28: Memorial Day Weekend

http://traffic.libsyn.com/blogoklahoma/BOK-090524-28.mp3

Memorial Day is a time to take stock of the present, reflect on the past, and renew our commitment to the future of America.

Today, as in the past, there are problems that must be solved and challenges that must be met. We can tackle them with our full strength and creativity only because we are free to work them out in our own way. We owe this freedom of choice and action to those men and women in uniform who have served this nation and its interests in time of need. In particular, we are forever indebted to those who have given their lives that we might be free.

I don’t have to tell you how fragile this precious gift of freedom is. Every time we hear, watch, or read the news, we are reminded that liberty is a rare commodity in this world.

This Memorial Day (of 1983), we honor those brave Americans who died in the service of their country. I think an ancient scholar put it well when he wrote: ``Let us now praise famous men . . . All these were honored in their generation, and were the glory of their times. Their bodies are buried in peace; but their name liveth for evermore.’’ As a tribute to their sacrifice, let us renew our resolve to remain strong enough to deter aggression, wise enough to preserve and protect our freedom, and thoughtful enough to promote lasting peace throughout the world.

Blog Oklahoma Podcast 25: Another Windy Day

http://traffic.libsyn.com/blogoklahoma/BOK-090405-25.mp3

It’s another windy day in Oklahoma, and this isn’t just another windy day. It’s the 4th day in a row of high winds here in the West OK. It’s been 4 days of howling wind, rattling my windows, shaking my trees, and blowing new trash in to my yard. Annoying as it is, the wind does have its benefits. Just over the horizon from my home is a brand new wind power farm. Generating much needed electricity to our state and beyond. Wind is the past, present, and future of Oklahoma. So everyone please remember this the next time your screen door gets blown off its hinges.

http://traffic.libsyn.com/blogoklahoma/BOK-090329-24.mp3

Oklahoma just had one of the worst snowstorms in recent history this past Friday. Many of our friends in the northwestern part of the state are still digging out. For us here in Elk City America the snow got about ankle high. But here it is Sunday and the snow has already melted away. I can see my lawn again. I am however particularly worried about all the plants around the state. It is spring after all, and every thing was starting to turn green. I took a tour of my yard this morning and everything that was green and blooming has wilted. So let’s hope all those plants bounce back soon. Hopefully everyone around the state survived the storms well and happy, everyone safe at home nice and warm.

http://traffic.libsyn.com/blogoklahoma/BOK-090315-23.mp3

I started preparing this week’s podcast with something funny, but ended up a on a short rant about social networking data overload, which you’ll find in the second half of the program. Every once in a while just have to rant. You read something in news, that just sets off that part of your brain forces you to comment on it. And I did. I think ranting is good every once in while. In fact I’m going to encourage you to rant on something this week. If you don’t have your own podcast or radio talk show, get an Utterli account. It’s free. You call a phone number and rant away. Other people will hear your rant and they’ll comment or rant about themselves. Start a chain reaction rant. So your goal this week dear Blog Oklahoma Podcast listener, go rant about something. Get it off your chest. But be nice about it.

I don’t know about you, but I’m looking down at the clock on my computer and just can’t imaging its as late as it’s telling me. Who would have thought shifting one hour would make such a difference. Now I’ll be appreciative of the daylight later this spring when I can go play out in my yard after work, but for right now... I’m tired.

Blog Oklahoma Podcast Video 1: Baby(the cat) in 12 Seconds

http://traffic.libsyn.com/blogoklahoma/ip17258-1234127790.mp4

A very short video using 12seconds.tv. At 12seconds.tv you can post very short 12 second videos. Last night I downloaded their iPhone app and created this 12 second slide show video of my cat, Baby(the cat). Currently you cannot record video with your iPhone, thus the slide show. Here’s some information from 12seconds.tv’s FAQ:What is 12seconds?
12seconds is the best place online for video status updates. It’s a super easy way to share what you’re doing with your friends and family using short video clips. You can use your web cam or mobile phone. Show your friends where you are, share your thoughts, or tell them how you’re doing. We are building a video status platform that will help you keep up to date with your friends 12 seconds at a time.

Why only 12 seconds?
Because anything longer is boring. The scientists here at the 12seconds dodecaplex have conducted countless hours of research to determine the precise amount of time it takes for boredom or apathy to set in during typical Internet video viewing. Our patent pending Electro-Tear-Duct Prongers have determined that exactly 12 seconds of video is the ideal amount of time to keep anything interesting.

So how many new years resolutions have you broken already? I can honestly say I’ve broken none. The reason? I didn’t make any this year. There were times past when I make resolutions to lose weight, to exercise more, to even blog more, but most of these are something I should be doing anyway. So why make a new years resolution over it. No this year I’m doing something different. I’m not going to make any fleeting new years resolutions, I’m going to set some specific goals this year. And to prove this to myself mostly, I’ve added them to my "Remember The Milk" task list. So now I have to do them, their in my task list. And I’m happy to say, I’ve completed one, and you’re listening to it.

Another thing I really like about fall, or October in particular, is Halloween. After Christmas and Thanksgiving its got to be my favorite holiday. And for more reasons than monster movies on TV and free candy, which isn’t so free for me anymore. No, there’s a really good reason for my fondness for Halloween.

Greetings everyone and welcome to the 10th episode of the Blog Oklahoma Podcast. Wow 10 episodes. I realize in the scope of the pod-o-sphere, my little podcast about life in Oklahoma is barely a drop in the bucket. But I’m happy about it. To me 10 episodes is quite an achievement for someone sitting in the corner of a guest bedroom using a USB Headset microphone, recording with Audacity, and constantly being interrupted by firetrucks, barking dogs, and a cat named Baby.

http://traffic.libsyn.com/blogoklahoma/BOK-080915-5.mp3

On these last few rainy days I got to thinking about my friends. Mostly the friends I’ve lost touch with. Its been time, distance, or both that has separated us from each other. Everyone gets busy with their lives. You loose track of time, and before you know it years have past since the last time you talked. Oh you might exchange e-mail with them from them from time to time, or not. You might find them again on Facebook, only neither of you really use Facebook all that much. So there you have it, a missed friend. Oh its not your fault, its not their’s. You just took separate paths on life’s journey. It happens. I myself am missing my best friend. I haven’t seen her since my wedding. And that was some time ago. We just lost track of time and each other. Oh don’t let me give you the impression I’m sitting here all depressed over it. It just sometimes I’ll be reminded of my old friends from a picture on the wall. Or I’ll hear a song on the radio, and I’ll think, "Hey you know who would like this..." It happens, and I’ll miss them. and I’ll think, "I really wish it would quit raining." So I would like to put this challenge out to you, call up an old friend. Get caught up. Renew that friendship. And don’t let a year past before you talk to them again.In The News:Some of the latest headlines from the Oklahoma blog-o-sphere and (Bum Bum Buuuum) the main stream media.This week in Oklahoma History:On September 16, 1893 nearly 7 million acres of the Cherokee Outlet were opened up for settlement in the great Cherokee Strip Land Run. Its a time where everyone shows off their colors, whether it be red & white, orange & black, or yellow & green.
Here we sit in the midst of American history. At the time I record this we are between two major party political conventions. The Democratic Party has just finished theirs with a historic night of music and great speeches. Now we get to see what the Republican Party will bring. Unfortunately we are also in the midst of another gulf coast hurricane. Visions of Katrina are on the front of every ones mind at about three years to the day. The mistakes of the past haunt us. Oklahomans around the state are ready with a helping hand. Evacuation centers are being opened for anyone fleeing the coast. To everyone arriving I want you to know that Oklahoma is here for you in your time of need.
