Funk-Melange

Funk Melange is a mixture of Funk, Disco, House and Breaks that gets your booty moving and shaking to the syncopation of beats and basslines from the very start of Chuck Roberts Acappella to Nathan Stewart’s Sweet Spot. It is truly a bright and shiny Funk compilation that takes the listener deep into the mix of my personal interpretation of this warm and organic style.

Within my many years of production study, I have found Ableton to be an incredible tool for creating "mix productions." I call them productions because of the total and absolute control the producer/DJ has at his fingertips allowing him to take the mix in whatever direction he feels necessary to literally control the vibe. Don’t like a part of a track? That’s okay... snip snip tuck tuck, add some beats/percussion, write a synth line/bassline over it, and viola, you have a transition that gels with your next track (or a short track that is all your own.) My experimentation doesn’t end there though, with the recent addition of the Akai APC-40 midi controller to my studio, the mixes will continue to get incredibly deeper and deeper. Soon, I will have enough in my repertoire to take this style of mixing on the road to perform "live." I will certainly enjoy that day when it finally arrives!

In the meantime take the time to listen, and if you like what you hear, always remember to do your part & recommend, favourite, comment then follow. Spread the Funk and unleash it because it’s good for you!

(A Funky House Mix)

This episode/mix was arranged exclusively for a recent show I did in Eugene, Oregon USA. Big up’s to the Gaia-Tribe who continue to preserve why we do this thing called electronic music. This is just the beginning of many more to come...

Over the past 10 years I have seen dance music and its technology evolve from analog performances into the digital age. With Serato DJ’s preserving the vinyl format, it goes without question that we will continue to utilize the turntable and digital modules to present our craft for another 10 years and beyond.

The age of the digital performer is upon us though, and with this I have been experimenting with different mediums, especially those which involve capturing a set within the Ableton Live platform. This interface literally turns the performer into a producer, and the producer into a performer overnight. With basic production knowledge, a fledgling performer can hone his arrangement skills and quickly create digital ready tracks or mixes to distribute over the net. Likewise, producers who have traditionally stayed within the realms of the studio are now finding themselves venturing out to perform on their laptops with midi interfaces and other compatible gear to produce memorable shows.

The simple ease of use within this software allows for creativity to literally flow uninterrupted...

The Able-Technolgy podcast and its subsequent episodes/mixes are only one example of utilizing this interface’s powerful features. For this mix I performed simple editing and automation to existing tracks contained within my music library, and added sporadic production through out the mix to enhance the flow.

The more I work with Live... the more technical each consecutive episode/mix will be, but for the time being please sit back and enjoy the premiere episode of the Able-Technology series podcasts ( A Funky House Mix )

Time Machine Series: John Osorio’s Summermix 1998

This is the first show that I have managed to install chapters in. It’s coded in ACC/MP4 format or M4a for iTunes. These type of files allow podcast producers the ability to construct chapters or track marks that enable listeners the opportunity to view album art and links about the artist for each track in the mix. This is a great feature as it allows you to skip through the mix which is really cool. If you can’t play (enhanced) podcasts... no worries there’s an mp3 format you can download as well.

This mix is now 10 years old, it was first recorded on a mix-tape and was a big hit back then. Recently a friend of mine suggested that I release this on the show, so I did just that. I hope you enjoy the mix... It’s old, but I think you’ll agree that it still resonates today...

For the ACC/MP4 and M4a listeners you can access the track information in the Chapter Section of your iTunes Player.

For those downloading the MP3:

1. Foremost Poets- Moon Raker (Accapella)
2. Earth Shakers- Rock On
3. Huda Hudia- Pump it up (Tony faline Maximum Funk Remix)
4. Mother’s Pride- Nightflight (Original Mix)
5. DJ Icey- Soundscape Rhythm
6. Explorium- Technologies Of Transcendance
7. Spacemen- Communion
8. Friction & Spice- Groove Me Remix
9. PMT- Marching Powder
10. Hooverphonic- 2Wicky (DJ Pulse Remix)
11. Big Bud- Transmission

(Trans-Atlantic Groove)

Here we are two weeks into the release of (Digital Domain) and I haven’t yet posted another "Live" mix . This episode however is an old raw mix that I have dusted off from my compilation collection. It was put together in the year 2000 and represents a deeper groove of evolution. It was a milestone mix because it was the first set that I burned onto CD for distribution. It was also the first time I collaborated with Josiah Smith, my sound engineer and good friend. We had fun working in Pro-Tools to beef up the sound to give it that signature HOUSE roundness. Before this release, all my mixes were copied onto mixtapes the old fashioned way. Later in the year I’ll post some of those old tape mixes of which I still have the DAT masters of (remember the DAT recorder?) It seems like ages when I used a DAT recorder to record my masters to.

I don’t have a track listing for the mix, but I know it contains some old G-Pal tracks, a Roy Davis Jr. track and some CASA del Soul Tracks you might like. This is one of those timeless sets that one never really gets tired of listening to. It is also the first mix that I managed to use on board effects in. I miss mixing on my Pioneer DJM-500... I still have it, but it is more of a museum piece at the moment.

Anyway enough rambling... cheers!

(Classic Summer Sounds)

This mix was done the old fashioned way... It’s a straight turntable mix...No Ableton, No Serato, No Mp3’s, No Wav files, nada... it’s clean, it’s simple and to the point. I wanted to post this piece to demonstrate some performance skills and pay homage to the old turntable media. I miss the roundness of vinyl, I miss the warmth of its sound, I miss the fidelity it produces, but honestly, I don’t miss the price tag of the vinyl format. I remember dropping hundreds of dollars monthly just to put together a decent set... Thankfully those days have gone by the wayside, and putting together smart sets don’t cost as much anymore. To further add, production vehicles such as Ableton, have allowed us to put our OWN music in our mixes... NOW that I like even more!

Be sure to check the show out the 2nd week of February 2007 as there will be a new Ableton produced down-tempo mix uploaded. In the meantime enjoy this classic summer mix circa 2004

Cheers!
