Hi Guys... I’ve been listening for a few shows now. I write alot of the
fake commercials Casey runs on SciFi Surplus.
In your last show, you commented on Netbooks and their return rates. I’ve
been looking at Netbooks for a while now, and what I keep coming back to is
that it seems the ones with better specs come with XP by default. So, when
we think about return rates, I’m wondering how many people are buying
Netbooks with a Microsoft OS, nuking it, and installing Ubuntu or something
like that?
The reason I don’t already have a Netbook is because the price gap between
a mid-level Netbook and a low end laptop isn’t much at all, and I can’t
decide which would be the better purchase. I wonder if you or your
listeners have had any experiences with Netbooks that really makes them
stand out versus a cheap laptop?

- Open Multiple instances of Excel (so you can have multiple windows) by holding down ctrl when you click on the second instance. One caveat is that copy / paste might act funny. The main thing I saw with copy paste is that if I copied a cell with a formula in it, it would paste the value of the cell rather than the formula. You can get around this particular issue by selecting the formula in the formula bar, and copy that rather than the cell itself. I saw the tip in the comments on this post, thanks to Knox for leaving it!

I’m sure that by now you’ve heard that Exchange server 2007 is only 64 bit. Of course you know that there’s a 32bit version for evaluation, but it’s not supported in production, but comes in pretty handy if you’re extending the schema. What I wasn’t aware of is that Exchange Server 2007 won’t install on Windows Server 2008 unless you have the installation media with SP1 integrated.
You’ll get an error that "Exchange 2007 cannot be used with the version of Windows operating system running on this computer". ]]>

- Swap File - It’s a good idea to put your swap file on a separate drive. No advantage if it’s a different logical drive on the same physical hard drive. You can argue about fragmentation, butfor goodness sake, don’t compress it.
- Speaking of compression, don’t compress your entire data and system drives.
- Have the floppy or CD as the first item in your bios’ boot menu.

Mike made a silly video of his rats, some discussion about Bill Gates leaving Microsoft. Mike explains why he disagrees with at least part of Art’s post.
Mike thinks that Microsoft has changed a lot over the last couple of years, and points out Channel 9, and Port25. Also, TechNet Live events are the best!
ICANN is making some changes to top level domain (TLD) availability, allowing people top buy their own TLD. Also, they are thinking about charging some form of a fee for returning a domain in the grace period to stop domain tasting. Read all about it here.
Mike and Art kick around some ideas for a series of articles, and reminisce about a couple of regular features that aren’t regular features anymore.
Mike and Art are giving some thought to testing out talkshoe, or even ustream, while we are recording our podcast. If you have any thoughts, let us know. If we do decide to do something like that, we’ll post about it before we do.

Microsoft Urges Windows Users to Shun Safari
Mike was wrong about the backdoor in the Compiler. What actually happened was that Ken Thompson demonstrated how it could be done. You can read a little about it here, and Ken Thompson talks about it in his Turing Award Lecture. Mike is going to have to find some examples of Unix / Linux Vulnerabilities.

Mike started watching a movie rated for 5 to 7 year olds, which ended up being a PG-13 movie. Lemony Snicket’s was pretty good. The subtitling of the baby was a really good touch.

Turning off UAC in Vista. Well, technically this is working around it, rather than turning it off.
Over at Teckh, Brandon Boyce posted a new and interesting way to work around UAC in Vista , which involves killing explorer and then restarting it as a Administrative process. I thought it was pretty neat. Personally, my favorite workaround for UAC is to change a local security policy.
Note: I don’t think UAC is that bad, except for Admin and power users. The average user won’t be bothered much by it. Anyway, here’s my workaround.
- Start > Control Panel > Make sure Classic View is selected > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy
- Expand Local Policies then click on Security Options
- Near the bottom you’ll find options that start with "User Account Control" Find the one that reads "User Account Control: Behaviour of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode".
- Double Click on it, and change the selection to "Elevate without prompting".
- Click on OK, then close all of the Windows.
- Note: As long as your computer is a local Administrators group, this should do it.
Surprise Problem question - A new segment that I dropped on Art
What is virtual memory and why do we need it.
Even though I’m still going to do a tutorial on it, we talk about Virtual Memory, and the difference between Memory (RAM) and Storage (Hard Drive). This might answer your question Kellypea . (Starts somewhere around 23 minutes into the podcast).
We also discussed this problem that a user was having with a missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe. You can find that post here at Tech Guy.org .

David Cross from Microsoft admitted it . UAC is meant to annoy users .
Repair install question - According to Wiki Answers , the Windows XP repair install checks the windows files, and replaces them if they are corrupt. Also checks out the registry.
Who bought Go back? Go back has it’s own Wikipedia entry! Go back was originally made by Wildfire, who was bought by Adaptec, spun off of Adaptec when Roxio was created, then finally sold to Symantec in April 2003.

Mike makes an attempt at explaining Incremental Backups vs differential backups. Just remember kids, a incremental back up backs up everything that has changed since the last backup of any kind, full or incremental. The differential backup backs up everything since the last full backup.
It was Princeton that came up with a workaround to defeat drive encryption. Here’s a Video .
