Zen 2 Wow - Episode 10: Eat Yogurt with Chopsticks

Episode 10 (Eat Yogurt with Chopsticks) looks at one of my favorite Zen 2 Wow’isms, idea #136...Do something radical. Eat yogurt with chopsticks, blindfolded.

This idea is designed to encourage YOU to try new things, be adventuresome, get out of the proverbial box.

I have found that getting out of my comfort zone and trying new and different things can help me become more effective, build better relationships, and become more motivated. Perhaps the same will hold true for you.

In the podcast I share a few ideas that have helped me in one way or another. They include:

1) Try Google Desktop to improve efficiency

3) Tell people about your goals (I’d like to sit on a board of advisors for a privately held company)

Other ideas I did not get to include:

1) Write personal thank you notes to build stronger relationship

2) Learn to say "no" to non-revenue generating, or non-value producing activities (your time is too valuable)

I encourage you to share ideas that fit the mold of Do something radical. Eat yogurt with chopsticks, blindfolded. E-mail me with ideas at Rob@Zen2Wow.com. Or, post a comment on the podcast website.

Zen 2 Wow - Episode 7 - Set Goals in November

Episode 7 (Set Goals in November) looks at Zen to Wow Idea #158 -- Set New Year’s resolutions in November to ease the pressure.

I specifically address the following 5 ideas to consider as you set goals for 2007 and beyond.

1. Make Goals S.M.A.R.T.

2. Set Personal and Professional Goals

3. Create Short and Long-Term Goals

4. Use Goals to Set Priorities

5. Understand the Action Steps Needed to Achieve Your Goals

But, there is more to goal setting. So, with this in mind...here are 5 additional thoughts that should help your turn your goals into realities.

Post and /or Share Your Goals: Goals can be very personal. As such, we have a tendency to hide them in our heads or the bottom of a file cabinet. Watch your goals really come to life the minute you put them up on the bathroom mirror or share them with your associates. By openly sharing your goals, they are no longer abstract wishes, but rather concrete things that are very achievable.

Celebrate Your Victories: Accomplishing a goal, no matter how minor or trivial it may seem, marks a true level of achievement. Acknowledge your success and use it to gain momentum as you reach for the next goal.

Understand and Learn From the Goals You Did Not Reach: Much can be uncovered by missing a goal. Maybe you set the bar too high, or underestimated how long it would take you to reach your objective. Perhaps you found a flaw in an assumption you made while setting your goals. Whatever the case may be, missing a target can be a meaningful opportunity if you take the time to reflect as to what can go right in the future.

Update Your Goals: Goals can and should change over time. Economic conditions, competitive threats, and new business opportunities could all impact how you view your goals in both the short and long-term. Actively look at your goals each quarter and reevaluate where you want to head.

Get Accountability: Goals are important and should not be treated lightly. If you are serious about success, enlist the help of a trusted advisor or coach to hold you accountable for your actions and push you to achieve your goals. You will be glad you did.

Do you have other ideas / strategies about goal setting? Would you like to share your goals with me and / or other listeners? Post a message below, or send me an e-mail at Rob@EngelmanManagement.com.

May your days and nights be filled with WOW!

This podcast is about effective communication -- particularly written communication. "Names" is a metaphor for "substance" while "Smiles" is a metaphor for "style." While the substance of our message is critically important, often time style gets overlooked.

Zen 2 Wow - Episode 4 - Meaningful Revolutions

Episode 4 (Meaningful Revolutions) investigates Zen 2 Wow idea # 225 -- Your revolution doesn’t have to be really big -- just meaningful.

The term "revolution" is really a metaphor for Marketing Plans. While I do believe that marketing plans are critical for the success of one’s business, they do not have to be big, elaborate, time consuming to create, or expensive to implement.

This episode reviews several elements of a marketing plan including:

1) Goals

2) Target Audience

6) Accountability

Here are a links to other articles I have written that talk about marketing plans:

Zen 2 Wow - Episode 3 - Bringing in the Experts

Episode 3 (Bringing in the Experts) looks at Zen 2 Wow idea #213...Better to pay an expert plumber than pay an expert carpet cleaner too.

The notion behind this idea is that we don’t do everything well. Inherently we know this, but we don’t always listen to ourselves. Typically, when we try to take on projects or assignments by ourselves, without the proper knowledge and/or technical skills, we could be setting ourselves up for failure.

I share a story about getting this podcast off the ground, as well as a "ah ha" moment I learned from on of my clients. Please share comments or other stories by clicking on the "comment" link below and to the right.

Cultivate an attitude of Gratitude

Well, my "soft launch" for the podcast has gone very well. I have received a great deal of constructive and positive feedback from friends, family and associates -- thank you to all.

Zen 2 Wow idea #230 simply states...Cultivate and attitude of gratitude. So, I just want to publicly thank several individuals who were particularly instrumental in helping me get Zen 2 Wow -- The Podcast up and running.

So, in no particular order...

1) Luria Petrucci (aka Cali Lewis at www.geekbrief.tv): Your story, guidance, inspiration, and suggestions (all while you should have been focused on your own packing) put the wheels in motion.

2) CC Chapman: We’ve never met, but your messages about consumer driven media on the Managing The Gray podcast (www.managingthegray.com) have been influential.

3) Ardath Berliant (www.contractcreatives.com): A little arm twisting goes a long way. Thanks for your friendship and support.

4) James Negley and Bruce Lorie (www.nsmedia.net): You were there when I needed someone to "hold my hand" and show me which buttons to push. Also, thank you to Terry for the voice over.

5) John Schwarberg and Rick Keith (www.iwsgroupinc.com): Thanks for providing a reality check and keeping me in line when I tired to go off course (more than once).

And to everyone else who has support me throughout this process -- May the Journey Continue.

Episode 2 (Point of View) is the 1st Zen 2 Wow podcast that embodies the true spirit of what these podcasts are all about -- exploring an idea from That Was Zen, This Is Wow and applying it to an everyday situation.

Point of View looks at how others view us. I talk about a banker who spends time talking about "dead presidents" vs. why a prospect should consider his bank. Plus, I toss out the idea of becoming a business doctor...

Finally...ask questions, lots of questions (listen to find out more)

Introduction

Hello and Welcome to Zen 2 Wow - the Podcast.

Throughout Zen to Wow I will share and explore personal and professional development ideas based a book Dr. Russ Riendeau and I wrote entitled "That Was Zen This Is Wow Ã?? 232 Ideas for Transforming Your Life From Ordinary to Extraordinary."

"That Was Zen, This Is Wow" is a fun, witty thought-starter of a book filled with thoughts, ideas, and musings we can take with us to find more rewarding outcomes in our daily opportunities. Sounds great...right.

Here are a couple examples...

* Is what I’m about to do taking me closer to or further from my goal?"

* When starting a revolution, pack your own lunch"

* If you were a tree, would you be proud to live in your yard?"

This podcast (and blog) will look at many of the 232 entries. Plus, solicit new ideas from the community.

The goal is to create a difference and make something happen.

Enjoy,

Rob Engelman

Oh Yeah, if you would like more information about the book (or would like to purchase your very own signed copy, go to www.engelmanmanagement.com
